The Art of Doing
Share
There’s something deeply satisfying about the doing—not just the finished piece, but every little step that leads to it. In fiber arts, the joy starts long before the first stitch is cast on. It begins with the spark of an idea: a color palette you can’t get out of your head, a skein that feels like a season, a texture that makes your fingers itch to begin.
It’s easy to think of making as a means to an end—a sweater, a wall hanging, a gift. But for many of us, the magic lives in the process. Choosing colors. Frogging rows. Twisting yarn between thumb and forefinger, not to test its strength, but just to feel it. These are quiet acts of mindfulness that let us slow down and reconnect—with our own creativity, with the world around us, and sometimes with generations before us.
There’s no “wrong” way to do this. Whether you’re knitting in the round, weaving on a homemade loom, or unraveling an old sweater to give it new life, fiber work invites you to explore without pressure. To play with color. To trust your hands.
So here’s to the doing—the tangled yarn, the imperfect rows, the rhythm of hand and heart moving together. This is the art. This is the joy.
